Surviving NWA Pollen Season: A Non-Toxic Spring Reset

· 5 min read

If you've lived in Northwest Arkansas through a spring, you know the moment: one warm week, and every car, porch and patio in Bentonville, Rogers and Fayetteville is dusted in yellow-green. Oak, pine and other tree pollen peak in spring, grasses follow into summer, and ragweed returns in the fall. All of it finds its way inside on shoes, clothes, pets and open windows.

The good news: a few consistent habits keep pollen from building up indoors. You don't need harsh sprays that trade sneezing for chemical fumes.

1. Stop pollen at the door

Most indoor pollen walks in. A washable mat outside and inside each entry, a shoes-off habit and a quick wipe of pets' paws and coats make an outsized difference. Wash entry mats every week or two during peak season.

2. Dust with damp microfiber, not feather dusters

Dry dusting just moves pollen into the air, where it settles again an hour later. A lightly damp microfiber cloth traps it instead. Work top to bottom: ceiling fans, shelves and window sills first, then furniture and baseboards.

3. Give soft surfaces extra attention

Pollen clings to fabric. Wash bedding weekly in warm water during peak season, vacuum upholstered furniture and rugs with a HEPA vacuum, and shake out throws and pillow covers outside (or simply launder them).

4. Mop hard floors, don't just sweep

Sweeping and dry mopping stir fine particles back into the air. A damp mop with a gentle, plant-based cleaner lifts pollen and dirt from hardwood, tile and laminate without leaving residue behind.

5. Skip the fragrance

When allergies are already flaring, synthetic fragrances and harsh fumes can make sensitive noses and lungs feel worse. That's one reason we primarily use Branch Basics: plant-based, fragrance-free and safe for kids, pets and allergy-prone households.

6. Mind the air

Keep windows closed on high-pollen days, run your HVAC on recirculate, and change air filters on schedule. It's an easy one to forget during a busy spring.
