In a college town like Fayetteville, lease turnover comes in waves, and so do move-out inspections. Whether you're a University of Arkansas student, a parent helping with the move, or a landlord turning over a unit, a thorough clean is the simplest way to protect a security deposit.
Here's the room-by-room checklist we use as a starting point on move-out cleans. Always read your lease too, since some landlords have specific requirements.
Kitchen
- Empty and wipe inside every cabinet and drawer
- Clean inside the refrigerator and freezer (remove shelves and drawers)
- Clean inside the oven, microwave and dishwasher filter
- Degrease the stovetop, range hood and backsplash
- Scrub the sink and polish fixtures
- Wipe cabinet fronts, handles and baseboards
Bathrooms
- Scrub tub, shower walls, glass and grout
- Clean toilet inside and out, including the base and behind it
- Wipe inside the vanity and medicine cabinet
- Clean mirrors, fixtures and exhaust fan cover
Bedrooms & living areas
- Empty and wipe closets, shelves and rods
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, vents and blinds
- Wipe window sills and tracks
- Spot-clean walls, doors, switch plates and frames
- Vacuum and mop every floor, including corners and closets
Don't forget
- Inside the washer and dryer (including the lint trap)
- Patio or balcony swept
- All trash removed from the unit
- Photos of every room after cleaning, for your records
Timing tips
Book your move-out clean for after the last box leaves but before your inspection. Empty homes clean faster and more thoroughly. During busy summer turnover, schedule early, since popular dates fill quickly.
